Early Years Numeracy
The Early Years Numeracy Program has been designed as a resource for schools to use in planning and implementing a strategic and comprehensive approach to mathematics teaching and learning. The program is based on the recognition that all children can succeed in mathematics given sufficient time and support and that students will be competent and confident in their early mathematical learning.
Resources
At all times a range of resources is available for “hands on” activities. This equipment includes counting cubes, attribute blocks, calculators, clocks, rulers, bead frames and learning technologies incorporating computers and relevant software programs.
Each classroom is supported by an extensive kit of appropriate resources.
Assessment
Assessment may take many forms and may include teacher observations and records, work samples or formal tests. It is ongoing and informs teachers about students' progress and their learning needs.
Students are assessed for school reports in June and December.
DEECD requirements include the participation of Grade 3 & 5 students in NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy & Numeracy). Results are sent to the student’s parent/s.
Students in Grades 3 - 6 also have the opportunity to take part in the International Competition & Assessment for Schools – Mathematics.
Parental Involvement
Parental involvement is encouraged at all levels of the school. Parents may assist in working with small groups and with individual students within the classroom environment. Parents also assist in their children’s learning at home through homework activities.
Homework
Mathematics, number facts and tables form part of homework requirements that each child in Grades 3 - 6 is expected to complete.
Mathletics – an online maths program is able to be accessed by children and families at home. Students are able to use their individual password to access the program and involve themselves in competitions and games with other students from around the world. Many grade levels also incorporate this into their weekly homework requirements with tasks set by the teacher. Mathletics provides an opportunity for the whole family to be involved in maths learning.
